AFRICAN COMMISSION ON HUMAN AND PEOPLES’ RIGHTS GRANTS AWAC THE OBSERVER STATUS
At the 81st Ordinary Session in Banjul, Gambia, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) granted an Observer Status to the Alliance of Women Advocating for Change (AWAC). This recognition underscores AWAC’s alignment with the principles of the African Charter and highlights its role in advancing human rights of grassroots marginalized women such as grassroots sex workers. AWAC is dedicated to empowering grassroots sex workers by building a strong movement that advocates for accessible and equitable healthcare, along with human rights and socio-economic justice both in Uganda and throughout Africa. The ACHPR’s endorsement marks a significant milestone, affirming AWAC’s commitment to amplifying the voices of grassroots sex workers and other marginalized women facing multiple and intersecting complex vulnerabilities across the continent.This Observer Status will enable AWAC to further its evidence based advocacy work in championing the rights and welfare of vulnerable women, and reinforcing its impact and influence on a continental level.
