rucial conversation at AWAC’s Media Cafe, themed, “Navigating the constricting civic space: The vital role of human rights defenders in advancing grassroots advocacy and justice” –where we’ll discuss the vital role of human rights defenders in advancing grassroots advocacy and justice in Uganda.

Over the past years, AWAC has implemented a series of activities to capacitate the Women Human Rights Defenders of the Marginalized communities such as, sex workers, those living with disabilities, living with HIV, affected by displacement, and the LBQ women. Our efforts have focused on capacity building, sensitization, and legal analysis to address laws and policies that hinder their rights. We’ve also facilitated social cohesion dialogues and engaged with media to raise public awareness and solidarity against human rights violations, including femicides that have claimed 22 lives of innocent women, mostly sex workers across the country between , November 2023 to June 2024.

Our media cafe aims to further strengthen public support and solidarity for human rights defenders, amplify their voices, and foster collaboration to address challenges. We’ll discuss the recently launched “Online and offline safety and security guidelines for women human rights defenders in Uganda” and explore strategies to enhance safety and security for grassroots Women Human Rights Defenders of marginalized communities.
